Adding to the Family - Eventually

We've been talking about getting chickens for a few years.  I guess it's becoming sort of trendy.  We actually do eat a lot of eggs so I think it could be a way for us to save some money and I've heard that fresh eggs are SO much better than store bought.  We don't have a timeline for getting our girls, just whenever we have their home ready.  I've been letting Jacob run with this project since he gets a lot of satisfaction out of building things on the fly.  One of his goals is to build the whole thing out of found materials because being green is cool and saving green is cool.  The building of the coop has been going on for a few months because we had some other projects going on and because of the crazy amount of rain we had this spring.  Thankfully the last several Saturdays have been beautiful and he's made some good progress.  I'll keep the posts coming as he continues and I hope to introduce you to our brood sometime soon!
Jacob cut the trees down himself for the posts.  The cedar was leftover from another property we had.

 The kids were helping.

Free hardwood floors found on the side of the road.  These chickens will be living in style.

Corrugated metal roof from a friend's garage.  Vents, old fence wood and other random wood from various roadside trash heaps.

Do you have experience building with found objects?  I'd love to hear what the coolest thing you built out of recycled materials is - Leave a comment!
